11 August 2022 11:35

A mud volcano has erupted near Lokbatan village in Baku's Garadagh district.

No one was injured As a result of the release of dirt to a height of about 5 metres, Caliber.Az reports.

There are about 800 mud volcanoes in the world, 350 of them are located in Azerbaijan. Moreover, some of these volcanoes are quite large and dangerous - eruptions are accompanied by gas condensate explosions and sometimes even significant ignitions (up to 1 km high) because they are usually located directly above oil and gas fields.

Director-General of the Republican Centre of the Seismological Service at the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) Gurban Yetirmishli said that the volcanic eruption recorded in Lokbatan lasted 4 minutes, although it was not strong.

Over 200 major eruptions from about 50 mud volcanoes have occurred on Azerbaijani territory from 1810 to the present.

The most famous and visited mud volcanoes are located near Gobustan city. So, Toraghay is the largest mud volcano in the world, which is located in the south of Gobustan. The height of the volcano is 400 metres, and the diameter of the volcanic crater is 150 metres. Toraghay is an extinct volcano, but from 1841 to 1950 it erupted six times.

Most volcanoes are low mud geysers, including those below the height of an adult, they look like bubbling hills. Mud volcanoes are active all year round.
