Musk: SpaceX to build Earth’s largest structure for mass Starship production VIDEO

02 June 2025 19:03

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced plans for a massive new rocket production facility dubbed Gigabay — a colossal structure that, if completed as planned, could become the largest building on Earth by certain metrics.

Speaking at SpaceX’s Texas Starbase during a live presentation, Musk unveiled preliminary details of the project, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“That's our Gigabay. That hasn't been built yet, but we're building it. This will be one of the biggest structures in the world, and it's designed for a thousand Starships a year,” he said.

The new facility will be dedicated to the high-speed production of the company’s next-generation rocket system, Starship, the fully reusable launch vehicle designed for missions ranging from Earth orbit to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

With a projected output of 1,000 Starships annually, Gigabay is set to revolutionise not just aerospace manufacturing, but the economics of space travel itself. Musk emphasised that such industrial capacity is critical to achieving SpaceX’s long-term goals, including the colonisation of Mars and ongoing support for NASA’s Artemis lunar missions. He said that to build a sustainable civilisation on Mars, it would be necessary to move millions of tons of cargo, and that such a goal could not be achieved with only a few rockets per year.

Gigabay will reportedly feature cutting-edge robotics and automation, including highly specialised assembly lines for both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage. This integrated system will allow for unprecedented throughput and rapid iteration — a hallmark of SpaceX’s engineering philosophy.

Each completed Starship is capable of delivering up to 150 metric tons to low Earth orbit — more than three times the payload capacity of the Falcon 9. This increased capability is expected to dramatically expand the scope of space missions, from launching massive space telescopes and satellites to transporting infrastructure for lunar bases.
