Musk-Trump feud enters new stage with Tesla-chief's threat of establishing new party

04 July 2025 20:23

Billionaire entrepreneur and former Trump ally Elon Musk marked US' Independence Day by launching a provocative public poll on his social media platform, asking followers whether it’s time to form a new political party.

"Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?" the poll published on X read. At the time of reporting, it had drawn over 200,000 votes, with more than 60% supporting the idea of founding a new political faction.

Musk, who has grown increasingly critical of both major U.S. parties, had floated the idea of an “America Party” before—most notably on the day following the expected passage of President Donald Trump’s sprawling domestic policy bill, dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” That legislation was officially approved by Congress on July 3. Musk has derided both Democrats and Republicans as the “uniparty,” blaming them for a ballooning national deficit under successive administrations. He says he envisions a fiscally conservative movement aimed at reducing federal spending—though he has shared few specifics about what the party's broader agenda might be.

Following the Senate’s narrow procedural vote on June 30 to advance debate on Trump’s signature legislation, Musk pledged to fund primary challenges against Republican lawmakers who supported the costly bill. "It’s time to hold them accountable," he implied in a post that drew widespread attention.

This latest development marks another escalation in the ongoing feud between Musk and Trump, two power players whose once-close alliance has unraveled. Musk had been a major backer of Trump’s presidential campaign and briefly served in his administration as head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But major policy rifts—particularly over government spending and regulations affecting Musk’s business ventures—have soured the relationship.

The president responded sharply this week, warning, "We’ll have to take a look" at the possibility of deporting Musk in light of their renewed hostilities over the spending bill.
