NATO chief highlights Germany’s role as example for Alliance members
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said he does not expect the United States to leave the North Atlantic Alliance, while calling on European allies to strengthen their defence capabilities and take Germany as a model.
In an interview with Welt am Sonntag, Rutte said: “I do not see the United States leaving NATO.” He added that US President Donald Trump is frustrated with certain alliance members, noting that he understands those concerns.
Rutte stressed the importance of reinforcing both Europe’s military capacity and NATO’s overall cohesion amid ongoing security challenges.
He also praised Germany’s role within the alliance, describing it as an example for other member states to follow in terms of defence contributions and responsibility-sharing.
