NATO chief to skip EU summit on Greenland, but briefed leaders on Trump talks
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will not participate in the European Council meeting, which was convened due to rising tensions over Greenland, the Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart told a European Pravda correspondent in Brussels.
The spokesperson said that the NATO chief had communicated with the Danish Prime Minister and the President of the European Council regarding his meeting with the President of the United States, Caliber.Az informs.
“The Secretary General is not participating in the European Council meeting this evening. Of course, he spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen about his conversation yesterday with the President of the United States. He also spoke with European Council President António Costa,” Hart said.
The heads of all 27 European Union member states will gather in Brussels on January 22 for an informal meeting to discuss the recent crisis in transatlantic relations prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland.
According to The New York Times, on January 21, meetings were held in Brussels among top military officials from NATO member countries, where the possibility of a territorial compromise over Greenland was discussed.
Later on the same day, US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he had “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland” during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump noted that thanks to the agreements with Rutte, he does not plan to impose tariffs on European countries.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the framework agreement on Greenland, previously announced by Trump, will require NATO allies to strengthen security in the Arctic.
