NATO forces conduct major underground command exercise in London

23 May 2026 09:51

Military personnel from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Italy have taken part in a large-scale command post exercise beneath central London, simulating a high-intensity NATO response to a future security crisis.

The British Ministry of Defence said the exercise, known as “Exercise Arcade Strike,” was conducted in the disused platforms of Charing Cross Underground Station, which has been closed for decades and is located in the Westminster area, Caliber.Az reports per the ministry's statement

According to the ministry, the drill was led by the British Army’s Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC), NATO’s deployable corps headquarters, and involved coordination planning for operations involving around 100,000 troops across land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains.

The scenario was set in the year 2030 and envisaged a NATO response under Article 5 to a hypothetical attack on Estonia by Russia, reflecting what military planners describe as a potentially heightened threat environment in the coming years.

Officials said the exercise tested the ARRC’s ability to command large-scale multinational operations from an unconventional underground command post, with equipment and personnel moved into the station during night operations.

The Ministry of Defence described the drill as one of the most significant command post exercises in recent decades, highlighting its focus on modern multi-domain warfare and NATO interoperability.
