NATO leaves door open to potential role in Iran conflict
08 July 2026 18:18
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance does not rule out becoming involved in the conflict with Iran, stressing that Tehran's location outside NATO territory does not automatically preclude the bloc's participation.
Speaking at a press conference following the NATO summit in Ankara, Rutte was asked about the recent US strikes on Iran and the alliance's potential role.
"The fact that Iran is outside NATO territory does not mean that NATO cannot become involved," Rutte said.
He also reiterated the alliance's unified position on Iran's nuclear ambitions, noting that all NATO member states agree that "Iran must not acquire nuclear capabilities."
