NATO parliamentarians convene in Latvia to address security challenges
Parliamentarians from NATO member states gathered in Latvia on April 11 for a meeting of the Standing Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, as discussions focused on key security issues facing the Euro-Atlantic region.
According to a statement from Latvia’s Saeima, the session is being held in the capital, Riga, with the participation of heads of delegations from more than 30 NATO member parliaments, Delfi reports.
Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, is set to address the participants and will also hold talks with the President of the Assembly, Marcos Perestrello.
The agenda includes discussions on the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on Euro-Atlantic security, as well as the strategic importance of the Arctic region.
Participants are also expected to exchange views with Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, meet with the head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Assembly, Yehor Cherniev, and visit the military base in Ādaži.
Raimonds Bergmanis, head of the Latvian delegation, said the agenda reflects the most pressing challenges in international security.
