NATO’s Rutte faces backlash over support for Trump’s military action
08 April 2026 11:41
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s positive remarks on the US military operation in Iran have drawn criticism from European allies.
According to Bloomberg sources, European leaders were shocked by the US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Nevertheless, Rutte publicly stated that Europe is “extremely glad” with the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Many allies questioned the appropriateness and correctness of the Secretary-General’s position.
Bloomberg sources suggest that Rutte’s comments may have led Trump to mistakenly believe that NATO would support the US operation in Iran.
Most alliance members responded negatively, and even the United Kingdom, which usually backs Rutte’s approach, felt he had overstepped.
