Netanyahu: Iran will never get nuclear weapons

06 February 2025 14:35

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to US President Donald Trump's statement about the United States taking control of Gaza.

“I don’t think he was talking about sending US troops to finish the job of destroying Hamas. This is our commitment. This is our job," he explained in an interview with Fox News, per Caliber.Az.

He firmly emphasized that Israel is “absolutely” committed to seeing the job through.

Netanyahu also commented on Trump's suggestion of relocating Gazans to other countries. He said, “They can leave, they can move and come back. You have to rebuild Gaza... This is the first good idea I heard.” He further called for the idea to be “developed, studied, and realized,” explaining that it could help “create a new future for everyone.”

The Iranian threat took centre stage during the interview, with Netanyahu reaffirming his stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “Trump's arrival in the White House gives tremendous, tremendous support to those who want to see Iran's aggression curtailed. Iran will never get nuclear weapons. This affects the entire region, lifts the spirit of Israelis, the spirit of those who want a different Middle East — prosperous and peaceful,” Netanyahu stated.

He continued, saying, “There is no doubt that Iran is going to acquire nuclear weapons. It probably would have happened 10 years ago if we had not taken various actions to deter them.” However, Netanyahu acknowledged that Israel’s efforts have not completely stopped Iran, admitting, “We have stopped them, but we have not stopped them completely.”

Earlier, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth reiterated the “strong and unbreakable bond” between the US and Israel during a meeting with Netanyahu in Washington. Hegseth emphasized that the US remains “100% committed” to Israel’s security, stating, “The Secretary stressed that the administration will support Israel's right to self-defence.”

The discussions between Hegseth and Netanyahu also centred around Iran, with both leaders agreeing on the need for closer coordination to address the threat posed by the Islamic Republic. Hegseth noted, “Iran continues to pose a significant threat to regional security,” and praised Israel’s military operations, saying, “Israel has done an exceptional job in disrupting Iran’s destabilizing activities.”

He concluded by reaffirming the US’s support, stating, “We stand with Israel as they protect their sovereignty.”
