Netanyahu moves to strip citizenship over slander of Israeli soldiers

17 September 2026 09:43

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he intends to propose legislation to revoke the Israeli citizenship of anyone who slanders the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in a post on X.

Netanyahu also said he would introduce a second bill to increase 20-fold the amount people could be sued for over slandering the IDF, The Jerusalem Post reports.

“Their place is not with us,” the PM noted. “We will hit them both in the citizenship and in their pockets.”

According to Netanyahu, the move was prompted by cases that had caused “enormous damage” to Israel and the IDF.

He made the remarks in the context of the public debate surrounding NAZA, a documentary by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor that received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. The film, based on anonymous testimonies, addresses the mass killing of civilians in Gaza.
