Netherlands, Denmark to supply 14 Leopard tanks to Ukraine
The Netherlands, in partnership with Denmark, has announced a significant military support package for Ukraine, including the purchase of 14 Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks.
This move comes as part of the international tank coalition dedicated to providing advanced weaponry to bolster Ukraine's defence against ongoing Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Dutch Defence Ministry.
The Leopard 2 A4 tanks, which will undergo necessary overhauls before delivery, are expected to reach Ukraine in 2024. The inclusion of these tanks in Ukraine’s arsenal is anticipated to enhance its battlefield capabilities due to the Leopard 2 A4’s superior firepower, robust protection, and high speed. The Ukrainian armed forces have demonstrated their proficiency in operating these tanks, promising effective utilization upon their arrival.
In a statement, Netherlands Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren emphasized the Netherlands' steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine. “The people of Ukraine are continuing their fight against the Russian aggressor with remarkable determination. Their resolve is a strong motivation for the Netherlands to persist in our unwavering military support. Ukrainian and European security are inextricably linked,” Ollongren said.
The purchase and delivery of the Leopard 2 A4 tanks represent a major contribution to Ukraine’s defence efforts. The joint initiative by the Netherlands and Denmark to procure these tanks involves a shared cost of approximately €165 million. This collaborative approach underscores the commitment of both nations to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
In addition to the tank purchase, the Netherlands will contribute €260 million towards two key initiatives for the joint procurement of 155mm artillery ammunition. This includes a €130 million contribution to the European Defence Agency (EDA) and another €130 million towards a German-led initiative for the collective purchase of artillery equipment. These investments aim to streamline the purchasing process, achieve economies of scale, and enhance the overall sustainment capability of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The coordinated support from the Netherlands, Denmark, and other international allies reflects a unified effort to strengthen Ukraine’s defence and resilience in the face of ongoing conflict.
