Netherlands offers to purchase Patriot missile systems for Ukraine

18 April 2024 10:00

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has signalled the Netherlands' readiness to procure Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems for subsequent transfer to Ukraine, as reported by the British newspaper Financial Times.

Rutte made this announcement during a meeting of European Union leaders, highlighting the country's commitment to supporting Ukraine amid escalating tensions in the region.

Rutte stated that while some countries possessing Patriot systems are reluctant to directly supply them to Ukraine, the Netherlands is prepared to acquire these systems independently and then facilitate their delivery to the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU). This proactive approach underscores the Netherlands' dedication to enhancing Ukraine's defence capabilities in the face of ongoing security challenges.

“We know the amount they need and we know that we should be able to get that done,” Rutte said on April 17 at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels. “We know that many countries have Patriot [anti-missile] systems but maybe do not want to deliver directly. We can buy from them and we can deliver to Ukraine. We have the money available. It’s crucial.”

The decision comes in the wake of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's call for member states to bolster support for Ukraine by providing ammunition and air defence systems. Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of NATO countries collectively reinforcing Ukraine's defences amidst heightened geopolitical tensions.
