New UK PM Andy Burnham speaks to Trump in first call after taking office

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has held his first telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump after entering Downing Street, as world leaders offered congratulations and pledged closer cooperation with Britain's new government.

The call with Trump was among Burnham's first international engagements after officially taking office at No. 10, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

While White House sources did not disclose details of the discussion, the two leaders are widely expected to have touched on plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

Earlier, Trump welcomed reports suggesting Burnham could support fresh fossil fuel production, writing on his Truth Social platform that people in Aberdeen would be "dancing in the streets."

Asked previously what he knew about the new British prime minister, Trump said: "I don't know, I think I see that he was, I guess, the mayor of a town.

"I hear he's extremely liberal, extremely."

Andy Burnham officially became the United Kingdom's new prime minister on July 20, succeeding Keir Starmer after securing the backing of a majority of Labour MPs to lead the governing party.

The former Greater Manchester mayor returned to Westminster after winning a parliamentary by-election last month and emerged as Labour's new leader following Starmer's resignation.

In his first speech as prime minister, Burnham pledged to rebuild public trust, shift more power away from London and focus on delivering economic growth, expanding social housing and improving public services.
