New York City mayor backs away from Netanyahu arrest threat VIDEO

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said that city authorities do not have the legal power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Bloomberg reports.

In a video posted on Instagram, accompanied by the caption, “Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal,” Mamdani stressed that it was clear the Israeli prime minister should face legal proceedings. However, he acknowledged that New York City lacks the authority to detain him.

“It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant,” Mamdani said, adding that the matter should be handled by “the federal government of the United States.”

Bloomberg noted that foreign heads of government traditionally enjoy diplomatic immunity while visiting the United States on official business.

On July 20, Mamdani said he was considering the possibility of arresting Netanyahu if the Israeli leader visited New York to attend the UN General Assembly in September.

Later the same day, US President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that Netanyahu would under no circumstances be arrested on US territory.

Meanwhile, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said the previous day that the person who should be arrested was not Netanyahu, but Mamdani himself.
