New York hit by severe weather during UN General Assembly

New York has been hit by severe weather as the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly continues in the city.

According to RIA Novosti, authorities declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.

By Saturday morning local time, strong winds had swept across the city, reportedly making it difficult to hold umbrellas and knocking people off their feet, while heavy rain caused minor flooding in Manhattan.

Authorities said up to 38 millimetres of rain could fall during the storm, with wind gusts reaching 17.9 metres per second.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned that the weather could damage power lines.
