New York reportedly prepares for possible National Guard deployment
New York is preparing for the potential deployment of U.S. National Guard troops to the city by President Donald Trump, Politico says, citing sources.
According to the publication, influential New Yorkers have met behind the scenes for several weeks to plan for the possible arrival of National Guard personnel or federal agents in the city.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed concern over potential actions by Trump in response to the election of Zohraan Mamdani as mayor.
She reportedly established a virtual command centre and held discussions with law enforcement officials, government representatives, business leaders, and activists. Hochul aims to prevent or at least mitigate any federal intervention in New York, sources said.
In the mayoral election held on November 4, the democratic socialist Mamdani won. Trump stated that he views the politician’s victory as a loss of U.S. sovereignty and promised to “address” it.
