New Zealand foreign minister urges stronger US engagement in Pacific

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters has warned that the world is becoming increasingly unsettled and called for stronger US engagement in the Pacific, citing growing geopolitical tensions and security threats in the region.

In his final major foreign policy speech before New Zealand’s November 7 election, Peters said the current environment was “not benign”, pointing to missile tests conducted without adequate notice, naval exercises moving further south and the growing threat posed by transnational organised crime, Reuters reports. 

While Peters did not name China in his speech, he has previously criticised Beijing’s July test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the South Pacific. China described the launch as a routine part of its annual military training and said it was not directed at any specific country or target.

“The United States is a Pacific power, and we need an engaged America in the Pacific in support of regional prosperity and security,” Peters said.

Peters, who is serving his third term as foreign minister, said Washington could play an important role in helping Pacific island nations strengthen their capacity to combat drug trafficking, which he described as an “evil scourge” affecting the region.

His remarks come as China has expanded its diplomatic, economic and security presence across the Pacific. New Zealand has sought to strengthen its own regional role through aid, defence cooperation and diplomatic engagement while encouraging larger partners, including the US, to respond to the priorities of Pacific island states.

Peters said Washington had responded to concerns raised by Wellington and other regional partners, pointing to US announcements in Palau that included $150 million in support for Pacific islands.

“We have talked a lot with them this term about the challenges facing the Pacific and the United States' announcements in Palau were welcome recognition that they have listened and are responding,” he said.

Peters also described the broader global environment as deeply troubled, citing economic disruption, uncertainty and the return of trade protectionism.

The 81-year-old veteran politician is seeking re-election as leader of New Zealand First, a junior partner in the governing coalition.
