Niger-France diplomatic relations severe amid rising tensions
Niger has adopted the harshest policy towards France among the Sahel States Alliance following the military coup in the country, leading to a complete breakdown in diplomatic ties with Paris.
According to Jeune Afrique magazine, which cites a European diplomatic source, the situation reflects a profound rupture in relations, Caliber.Az reports.
"Of the three Sahelian nations where military regimes have taken control, Niger has enacted the most drastic measures. The diplomatic relationship between Niamey and Paris has entirely disintegrated," the source stated.
In addition to shuttering the French embassy in Niger, a French school in Niamey has also been closed. The source further noted that France has opted out of co-managing the French Institute in Niger, an institution previously emblematic of France’s cultural soft power in the country.
