Niger suspends uranium, gold exports to France

The new Niger authorities have suspended the export of uranium and gold to France.

The junta announced that it was suspending the export of uranium and gold to France with immediate effect, BBC reports.

Earlier, Spain and Germany decided to suspend cooperation with Niger. France has suspended financial support programs for Niger until the restoration of constitutional order in the African country, the French Foreign Ministry said earlier.

According to the BBC, Niger is the seventh largest producer of uranium in the world. According to French media, Niger accounts for between 15 per cent and 17 per cent of the uranium used to generate electricity in France.
