Nine killed, dozens injured in Massachusetts nursing home fire
Nine people were killed and 30 others injured in a fire that broke out at a nursing home in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.
Emergency team arrived at the scene during the night of July 13. They encountered heavy smoke and flames near the building’s entrance, with residents trapped inside. Some were seen leaning out of windows, crying for help, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The facility housed approximately 70 residents.
By Monday morning, firefighters had managed to extinguish the blaze and enter the building, rescuing many of those inside. Around 50 firefighters responded to the call, including 30 who were off duty at the time. Five firefighters sustained injuries during the operation.
Police officers also took part in the evacuation, helping to remove both the deceased and injured individuals, as well as pets from the premises.
Most of the nursing home residents were transported to local and regional hospitals.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
