Nine people injured in shooting near Indiana University campus in US

At least nine people were wounded in a mass shooting near the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, in the early hours of April 26, as crowds gathered to celebrate the annual Little 500.

According to the New York Post, gunfire erupted shortly after midnight on Kirkwood Avenue, a busy nightlife strip lined with bars and restaurants just steps from the university campus. Police were called to the 400 block of East Kirkwood, where they discovered multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Nine victims were transported to local hospitals, including six by ambulance, as of 3 a.m. Authorities have not yet disclosed the severity of the injuries or the victims’ conditions.

Witnesses told reporters that the shooting followed a physical altercation between two women. One witness said the situation escalated suddenly when one of the individuals appeared to draw a firearm and open fire.

“Two women fighting… I didn’t think too much of it,” a witness said. “I figured the police would get to it. But then I saw a girl reach toward her pants leg and start firing. By then, I was already running the other way.”

Law enforcement officials have not made any arrests and are urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward. University representatives stated that no students are believed to have been involved in the incident.

In a statement, a university spokesperson condemned the violence, noting that it had overshadowed what is traditionally a festive weekend for both the campus and the wider Bloomington community. Authorities credited multiple agencies, including local police and state forces, for their rapid response.

The Little 500, widely regarded as the largest collegiate cycling race in the United States, attracts large crowds each year, with Kirkwood Avenue serving as a central gathering point for celebrations.
