Nine police officers killed as militants storm checkpoint in Pakistan

Armed militants attacked a police checkpoint in the Hangu district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing nine police officers, Dawn reports.

According to police, another 28 people were injured in the attack. Additional security forces were deployed to the scene following the assault, but the militants carried out an ambush.

During the ensuing exchange of fire, police said 15 attackers were killed, while several others were wounded. Law enforcement authorities stated that militants from the “Fitna al Khawarij” group were responsible for the attack.

“Fitna al Khawarij” is a group formerly known as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or the Pakistani Taliban Movement.
