No immediate collapse expected in Iran, EU top diplomat says

13 January 2026 19:58

The European Union does not foresee the imminent fall of Iran’s leadership under pressure from ongoing protests, but it is actively working toward that objective by supporting civil society within the Islamic Republic, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said during a press conference in Berlin.

Noting that history offers numerous examples of regimes collapsing, Kallas emphasized that the crucial question is what will unfold in Iran in the coming months, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Kallas said that the Iranian government might go the way of former President Bashar Assad’s government in Syria, which fell swiftly in late 2024 in a “surprise for everybody.” But she added that “very often these regimes are very, very resilient.”

The EU foreign policy chief said that “right now … it is not clear whether the regime is going to fall or not.” She said it would ultimately have to be up to the Iranian people to make decisions.

Kallas stressed that any potential change in Iran’s ruling regime would require a credible alternative emerging from within the country. “That is why the EU is actively supporting civil society,” she added.
