Northern Italy protests leave over 60 police officers wounded

26 July 2026 11:15

More than 60 Italian law enforcement officers were injured on July 25 during clashes with opponents of the Turin-Lyon high-speed rail project in the Val di Susa valley in northern Italy.

The unrest occurred near the construction site in the municipality of Chiomonte, where several groups of No TAV activists breached security barriers and entered the site. Protesters hurled stones, firecrackers and Molotov cocktails at police, Caliber.Az reports, citing Corriere della Sera.

Four law enforcement vehicles were set on fire during the clashes. According to the newspaper, the most active group consisted of around 700 masked demonstrators.

Police responded by deploying water cannons and tear gas. Rail services between Bussoleno and Borgone, as well as traffic on the A32 motorway, were temporarily suspended.

Investigators are reviewing drone footage of the incident, while the extent of the damage to the construction site and equipment is still being assessed.
