Norway’s FM: Ukraine remains Europe’s top priority despite Greenland debate
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has affirmed that Europe’s support for Ukraine remains its primary concern, despite rising tensions surrounding Greenland.
Speaking at the Ukrainian House in Davos, Eide stressed that the European Union is keen to maintain US involvement in efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
“Europe views Ukraine as the number one issue,” Eide said, highlighting the stark contrast between the ongoing war and discussions over Greenland. “Ultimately, the Americans did not invade Greenland — there were only discussions. But the war in Ukraine continues.”
Eide acknowledged that EU member states are actively debating possible responses to developments in Greenland. However, he noted that no formal measures would be announced until they are fully formulated.
The minister also underlined Europe’s cautious approach to US relations on other matters. While Europe could adopt a tougher stance on certain issues, it is avoiding conflict to preserve Washington’s support for Ukraine.
“We consider it extremely important to maintain US involvement — at least in a supportive role — in a process led by Europe,” Eide said. “No one in Europe wanted a discussion about Greenland because we did not see it as a problem: Greenland is part of NATO.”
