Norway’s oil windfall swells to €67 billion on back of global tensions

12 May 2026 17:17

Norway is set to receive a significant boost in oil and gas revenues in 2026, driven by rising global energy prices linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

According to NRK, the government now expects total petroleum sector revenues to reach approximately €67 billion this year — €15 billion higher than previously forecast and roughly 30% above earlier estimates of €51.8 billion.

The additional income will be transferred to the country’s sovereign wealth vehicle, the Government Pension Fund, which manages assets of nearly €1.9 trillion and is the largest fund of its kind globally.

Despite the windfall, Norwegian authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to fiscal discipline. The government stressed that the extra revenues will not be used to increase domestic spending, but will instead be saved to avoid overheating the economy.

Norway currently produces around 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, maintaining its position as a major energy exporter.

To counter inflationary pressures, the central bank has recently raised its benchmark interest rate to 4.25%, citing rising wages and higher energy costs. In parallel, the Ministry of Finance has updated its economic outlook, increasing its oil price forecast to $91 per barrel while lowering projected growth in the non-oil economy to 1.7% for 2026.

The government is also preparing for challenging budget negotiations in parliament, as its popularity declines. Spending financed from the sovereign wealth fund is estimated at 579 billion Norwegian kroner this year, adding further pressure to maintain a balanced fiscal approach.
