Official: Pakistan studies Azerbaijan’s smart city model

19 May 2026 21:08

Pakistan is closely examining Azerbaijan’s experience in smart city development and sustainable urban planning as it moves forward with plans to develop its first carbon-neutral district, a senior Pakistani representative has said.

Usman Nadeem Siddiqui, speaking at the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), said Pakistan is working on modern urban initiatives, including smart cities, sustainable infrastructure and new models of urban development aimed at improving environmental standards and liveability, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

He noted that significant steps are being taken in Pakistan towards establishing a carbon-neutral district, adding that Azerbaijan’s urban transformation projects are being studied as a successful example.

Siddiqui said Azerbaijan’s Smart City and Smart Village programmes are seen as effective models for integrated and sustainable development.

He added that Pakistan is exploring how similar approaches could be adapted in Punjab province, with a focus on sustainability, efficient infrastructure and improved public services.

Emphasising the importance of green and public spaces, he said they play a vital role in maintaining air quality, enhancing urban comfort and improving public health outcomes.

He also said the clean and green urban environment observed in Baku had made a strong impression on the Pakistani delegation, adding that such an experience would help inform future urban development policies in Pakistan.
