Ohio shooting leaves police sergeant, teen girl among three dead
Police Sergeant Scott Ries was among three people killed in a shooting late July 5 night in Rittman, Ohio, that also left four sheriff's deputies wounded, authorities said.
According to a joint statement from the Wayne County and Medina County sheriff's offices, officers responded at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time to a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunfire at a residence in Rittman, a city about 45 miles south of Cleveland, ABC News reports.
Authorities said responding officers "came under immediate gunfire" upon arriving at the scene.
Rittman Police Sergeant Scott Ries, a 10-year veteran of the department, was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire.
Two civilians — Christine McWilliams, 44, and McKinley McWilliams, 13 — were also pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
The suspected gunman, identified on July 6 as 39-year-old Brandon Fazekas, was also killed, according to authorities.
Four deputies from the Medina County Sheriff's Office sustained gunshot wounds. Two were taken to a local hospital for treatment and have since been released, while the other two were treated at the scene, officials said.
A K-9 from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office was also shot and remains in serious condition.
The incident is under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
