One dead, 25 missing after migrant boat sinks off Greek island

At least one person has died and 25 others are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of the Greek island of Gavdos, according to the Greek Coast Guard.

The boat was carrying 77 people in total. Crews from two nearby vessels rescued 51 people following the incident, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media. 

According to the United Nations, more than 22,000 irregular migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa have arrived in Greece since the beginning of 2026. In comparison, around 49,000 people arrived in the country throughout the whole of 2025.

Roughly half of the migrants who arrived in Greece this year departed from Libya and reached the island of Crete.
