Russian forces carried out a large-scale wave of strikes using drones, aviation, artillery, and multiple launch rocket systems against Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, while also targeting port infrastructure in Odesa, Ukrainian officials said on April 22.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a total of 511 strikes hit 35 settlements across the region over the course of the attacks. Among the affected areas were the city of Zaporizhzhia, as well as Volniansk, Novooleksandrivka, Stepnohirsk, and Mala Tokmachka.
According to Fedorov, one person was killed, and eight others were injured. Authorities also recorded 124 reports of damage to residential buildings, vehicles, and critical infrastructure.
The fatality in Zaporizhzhia was identified as an assistant train driver who was on duty at the time of the strike.
“Tonight, an enemy UAV attacked the Zaporizhzhia-Leve sorting station. At the moment of the strike, a train with an electric locomotive was on the tracks. The assistant driver sustained fatal injuries. My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. The driver was hospitalised,” said Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, Oleksii Kuleba.
Separately, Kuleba said Russian forces also targeted port infrastructure in Odesa with drones, causing multiple fires.
According to his statement, “fires broke out,” and damage was reported to piers, warehouse facilities, railway infrastructure, and assets belonging to port operators. He added that no casualties were reported in the Odesa strike.
