Ongoing conflict in Sudan leaves over 1,200 children dead

20 September 2023 06:03

Over 1,200 children under the age of 5 have already died in nine camps in war-scarred Sudan in the past five months, because of a deadly combination of measles and malnutrition.

As reported by the AP, referring to the UN’s refugee agency's statement on September 19, the deaths were recorded between May 15 and September 14 by its teams in the White Nile province, where thousands of Sudanese have sheltered as fighting has raged for six months between rival generals, in the capital of Khartoum and elsewhere.

The publication recalls, that Sudan plunged into chaos in mid-April, when simmering tensions between the military, led by Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, transitioned into open warfare which killed already more than 5,000 and wounded 12,000..

The UN migration agency re[prted over 2.5 million people having had to flee their homes, including more than 1 million who crossed into Sudan’s neighboring countries.
