Ongoing earthquakes in Aegean Sea Latest tremors continue to shake region

21 February 2025 16:15

The Aegean Sea continues to experience seismic activity between the Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos, with tremors persisting in the region.

Over the past few days, from February 19 to 21, earthquake magnitudes have been recorded at or below 4.2, sparking concerns among residents and tourists, Caliber.Az reports, citing the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

According to  EMSC, larger earthquakes, exceeding magnitude 5, were recorded on February 18. The EMSC reports that, throughout February 2025, nearly 3,000 seismic events with magnitudes over 2 have been registered in the area, raising alarm over the region’s ongoing instability.

Historically, the Aegean Sea has been a hotspot for seismic activity, with numerous tremors having been recorded in recent years. Earlier this month, the continued quakes led many tourists to evacuate the islands for safety.

Experts speculate that the seismic activity is the result of a "major rupture" situated tens of kilometres south of Santorini. This area is part of the Aegean Plate, a small lithospheric plate situated in the eastern Mediterranean, which interacts with larger tectonic plates, including the Eurasian, Afro-Arabian, and Anatolian plates.
