Only nuclear strike could cut Ukraine off from internet Tech industry expert says

Completely cutting Ukraine off from the internet would be virtually impossible through conventional attacks and, in the view of Internet Invest head Alexander Olshansky, would require an extreme scenario involving a nuclear strike.

Olshansky, who founded MiroHost, said damage to individual elements of Ukraine’s internet infrastructure could cause slower connections or disrupt specific services, but would not be enough to bring nationwide communications to a complete halt.

“The internet is built in such a way that you can cause damage, slow something down, and some things will work poorly. But to completely leave [the country] without communications — I don’t think that is possible,” Olshansky said.

His comments came amid recent Russian attacks on data centres and communications infrastructure in Kyiv, which have caused disruptions for some Ukrainian providers. Even the destruction of several data centres would not, in his assessment, be sufficient to eliminate internet access across the country.
