Outgoing NATO chief to become Munich Security Conference chairman

08 October 2024 20:37

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) has announced that Jens Stoltenberg will succeed Ambassador Christoph Heusgen as the next Chairman following the 61st edition of the conference in February 2025.

Stoltenberg, who has served as NATO Secretary General for a decade, is a prominent figure in global diplomacy with extensive experience in security issues, Caliber.Az reports, citing the MSC website.

Stoltenberg's tenure at NATO, from 2014 to 2024, has been marked by significant developments in international security, including responses to evolving global threats and strengthening transatlantic relations.

In addition to his role at NATO, he has held various positions within the Norwegian government, including ten years as Prime Minister and roles as State Secretary for the Environment and Minister of Energy, Economy, and Finance. His contributions to global diplomacy earned him the American Medal of Freedom, a testament to his influence on international security policy.

In his acceptance statement, Stoltenberg expressed his commitment to the MSC’s mission, stating, “I have dedicated my entire political life to maintaining peace. It is a great honour for me to serve as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference and make a contribution to its mission of ‘peace through dialogue.’ Few international platforms are as important as the MSC to promote conflict prevention, dialogue, and international cooperation.”

Wolfgang Ischinger, President of the MSC’s Foundation Council, praised Stoltenberg's reputation and experience, remarking, “I am delighted that Jens Stoltenberg has agreed to chair the Munich Security Conference. With his worldwide reputation and immense experience, Jens will lead the conference into an even more important and global role. There is no one better qualified.”

Outgoing Chairman Ambassador Christoph Heusgen expressed gratitude for his tenure, highlighting achievements such as the opening of the MSC to the "Global South," reaching gender parity in panels, and initiating the “Women Parliamentarians Program.” He also noted the success of the “Zeitenwende on tour” initiative, which brought discussions on foreign and security policy to numerous cities across Germany.

Looking ahead, Wolfgang Ischinger will continue as President of the Foundation Council, with Helga Maria Schmid, former Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), remaining as his deputy.
