Over 100 police injured in Turin clashes with protesters

01 February 2026 21:36

More than 100 law enforcement officers were injured in clashes with demonstrators that took place yesterday in Turin, Italy.

According to ANSA, citing official sources, 97 police officers, 5 Carabinieri, and 7 members of the Guardia di Finanza (the Finance Ministry’s law enforcement unit) sustained injuries.

Leaders across Italy, including both the government and opposition, expressed solidarity with the police. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni personally visited two officers in the hospital, calling the incident unacceptable and describing it as “an attack on the state.”

The clashes erupted during protests attended by approximately 15,000 people, who were opposing the closure of a social centre by authorities. Anti-government slogans and chants in support of Palestine were reported during the demonstration. At one point, protesters began setting fire to trash containers, igniting firecrackers, and throwing stones at police. Security forces responded using water cannons. A video circulated online showing masked protesters assaulting a police officer.

Only a few arrests have been reported so far. Authorities have launched an investigation into public order violations and resistance against police.
