Over 50 countries condemn Israel’s recognition of Somaliland
More than 50 countries, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, have condemned Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
The foreign ministries of these countries issued official statements on their social media platforms, per Russian media.
Egyptian officials warned that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland sets a dangerous precedent and poses a threat to international peace and security. Saudi Arabia described the move as an attempt to strengthen “unilateral separatist measures that violate international law.”
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the country will never permit the establishment of foreign military bases or other mechanisms on its territory that could draw it into indirect conflicts or provoke regional and international military actions.
Israel became the first country in the world on December 26 to officially recognise Somaliland as a sovereign state.
Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent administrative, political, and security entity. Despite functioning autonomously, its leadership has been unable to secure official international recognition, while the central Somali government remains unable to exercise control over the region.
The Somali government continues to reject Somaliland’s independence, considers the region an integral part of its territory, and views any direct engagement or agreements with Somaliland as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
