Over 6,000 prisoners still at large in Nepal following mass escape during protests
Nepalese authorities have said that more than 6,400 prisoners remain at large following a mass prison break earlier this month, triggered by the Gen-Z movement on September 9.
According to the Department of Prison Management, a total of 14,549 inmates escaped from 28 prisons and nine reformatories across the country during the unrest, Caliber.Az reports per Nepalese media.
To date, 8,054 escapees have been returned to custody—7,713 from prisons and 341 from reformatories. Department Director Chomindra Neupane stated that some of the returnees surrendered voluntarily, while others were apprehended by security forces during ongoing search operations.
The remaining 6,494 individuals—5,872 from prisons and 622 from reformatories—are still on the run. Ten inmates have been confirmed dead since the mass breakout.
Efforts to track down the remaining fugitives continue nationwide.
