Palestinian political landscape shifts with death of Ahmed Bahar
On the frontlines of the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a significant figure in the Palestinian political landscape, Ahmed Bahar, has fallen.
According to reports from the Palestinian news agency Maan, the Vice Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council succumbed to injuries inflicted in Gaza. The specifics surrounding the nature and cause of Bahar’s injuries were not disclosed, BNN reports.
A Blow to Hamas
News from Gaza reveals that Bahar, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, was purportedly targeted in an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) airstrike earlier this week. As a senior figure within the internationally recognized terrorist organization, his injury in the IDF strike ultimately led to his demise. Bahar’s role extended beyond his membership in Hamas’ political bureau; at 76, he served as the head of the Shura Council of Hamas and formerly as the deputy speaker of the Palestinian Parliament.
Impact on Gaza’s Underground Network
The IDF has confirmed ‘significant’ attacks on underground facilities in Gaza. These sites, suspected to be the hiding places of senior Hamas officials, have been under constant surveillance and attack. Despite the IDF’s confirmation of these impactful strikes, they have refrained from verifying the elimination of specific individuals. This ongoing conflict has seen Israel make significant advancements in Gaza City. Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, ‘We have completed taking over and clearing the western part of Gaza City and are now advancing to the next stage.’
Repercussions on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Bahar’s death could trigger a shift in the dynamics of Palestinian politics. The loss of this key figure, coupled with the ongoing Israeli advances in Gaza, might influence the strategies employed in this conflict. The Israeli forces found an array of heavy rockets, drones, and other warfare equipment during an overnight raid in northern Gaza. Amid the turmoil, the body of 19-year-old Noa Marciano, an Israeli soldier held by Hamas, was found and extracted by IDF troops near the Shifa Hospital in Gaza. The battle extends beyond Gaza, as evidenced by Syria’s response to Israeli missiles fired from the Golan Heights area toward Damascus.
