Palestinian president announces post-war elections plans
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on October 4 announced plans to hold presidential and legislative elections within one year following the end of the war in Gaza.
In a statement, Abbas said that candidates will be required to commit to the political program of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the Arab Peace Initiative, and the principles of a unified security authority and legal system, Caliber.Az reports per Arab media.
Urging all national forces and institutions to assume their responsibilities, he emphasised that the Palestinian people remain committed “to achieving freedom, independence, and the establishment of a fully sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
“No party, political force, or individual may run for office unless they commit to the political program and the international and legal obligations of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the implementation of the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative, the resolutions of international legitimacy, and the principle of one system, one law, and one legitimate security force," he added.
