Paris tries to convince New Caledonia to remain part of France

Drench Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, intends to convince the population of New Caledonia to remain part of France.

The minister announced it in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper on March 5.

“We want to convince the people of New Caledonia that it is better for them to remain part of the French Republic,” Darmanin said.

He noted that this overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean today enjoys significant financial support from the mainland. In the event of independence, according to Darmanin, the authorities of the archipelago would have to independently raise funds in order to provide an adequate level of services to the population.

Le Figaro recalled that New Caledonia receives more than €1.5 billion from the French budget for the needs of the 270,000 population living in the archipelago.
