Parliament greenlights Moldova’s departure from post-Soviet bloc
The Parliament of Moldova has officially approved the termination of the country’s participation under the Charter of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), marking a decisive step in its disengagement from the regional organization.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced the development during a session, telling lawmakers, “The draft has been approved,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
On March 20, the Moldovan Parliament gave preliminary approval to draft legislation denouncing both the agreement establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the organization’s charter. Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi stated that the country’s formal withdrawal from the CIS would take slightly over a year to complete.
On April 2, opposition factions called for the removal of the denouncement measures from the parliamentary agenda. However, the ruling Action and Solidarity Party rejected this proposal, ensuring the issue remained on the schedule for further consideration.
