Pentagon chief signals major military pivot toward homeland, Indo-Pacific

05 June 2025 17:49

The United States is set to recalibrate the global deployment of its military forces to better align with evolving strategic priorities, focusing primarily on securing the southern border and enhancing deterrence capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Addressing the NATO defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels, the Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, have indicated that the US will intensify efforts to achieve comprehensive control over the southern border, addressing the influx of millions of unauthorized migrants that previous administrations struggled to manage, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

Securing this frontier has emerged as a paramount national security objective, prompting a reallocation of military resources and personnel.

Simultaneously, the United States plans to bolster its military posture in the Indo-Pacific, a region deemed critical to maintaining regional stability amid rising challenges from strategic competitors. This enhanced focus seeks to strengthen deterrence measures and ensure the US remains a credible power capable of safeguarding its interests and those of its allies.

In adopting this dual-pronged approach, Washington acknowledges the necessity of distributing the responsibility of global security more equitably among allied nations. The Pentagon recognizes that the US cannot, nor is it obligated to, simultaneously defend all global partners, necessitating a more selective and sustainable military engagement strategy.
