Pentagon comments on reasons for Russian troops' retreat from Snake Island
The United States Department of Defence has confirmed the Russian retreat from Snake Island and does not consider it a "goodwill gesture."
According to "Ukrainska Pravda", this was stated by a senior US Defence Department official, quoted by the Pentagon website.
"We see this development as one in which the Ukrainians have been very successful in putting significant pressure on the Russians, including using the Harpoon missiles that they recently acquired to attack the supply ship.
So the Ukrainians have made it very difficult for the Russians to support operations and have made them very vulnerable to Ukrainian strikes. So, of course, the Russians abandoned the island," said a Pentagon spokesman.
The Pentagon believes that taking Snake Island under the control of the AFU is a relief to the defence of Odesa, as well as an opportunity to open sea lanes without Russian control.
