Pentagon to present NATO plan for reducing US forces in Europe in June

The Pentagon is set to present NATO with a proposal in June to reduce the presence of American troops on the continent, Welt am Sonntag reports, citing a senior US defence official.

“These changes will be incorporated into our proposal for troops and military capabilities at the next NATO force planning conference,” the source said.

According to the official, the plan envisages allies taking primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defence.

The newspaper noted that European countries were aware of US intentions to partially withdraw troops but had expected the process to unfold gradually.
