Pilot dies as plane crashes into crocodile-infested waters in Australia
A light aircraft crashed over crocodile-infested waters east of Darwin city, Australia, on January 12, claiming the life of its 63-year-old male pilot.
Emergency services responded to reports of the crash at Fogg Dam in the municipality of Middle Point. The aircraft reportedly carried two people at the time, Caliber.Az reports via Australian media.
A CareFlight helicopter and Search and Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. A 29-year-old female passenger was winched from the wreckage uninjured and transported to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment.
Tragically, the pilot was found deceased inside the aircraft.
Authorities have closed Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve until Wednesday, January 15, 2025, to facilitate incident management and recovery operations. The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife warned visitors to avoid the area due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles.
Police are expected to provide further updates during a media briefing on January 13 afternoon.
