Plane collides with police helicopter in US, leaving one dead

One person was killed, and two police officers were injured when a light aircraft collided with a police helicopter during a training exercise in Pennsylvania, US, CNN reports.

The incident occurred at around 6:52 p.m. local time on August 19 at Carlisle Regional Airport in Cumberland County, approximately 190 kilometres west of Philadelphia.

According to police, the two-member helicopter crew was conducting a routine training exercise near the runway. At the same time, a two-seat Cessna Model 150 travelling along the runway veered to the right and struck the helicopter, which was flying at low altitude.

The two officers became trapped inside the helicopter, but one of them managed to break a window and help his colleague escape before rescuers arrived. Both officers sustained injuries.

The aircraft’s pilot was killed at the scene. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
