Planned US-Iran talks in Switzerland postponed

19 June 2026 09:09

A planned round of U.S.-Iran negotiations in Switzerland will not take place as scheduled on June 19, according to Switzerland's foreign ministry, adding uncertainty to the next phase of diplomatic efforts following a tentative agreement aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The talks were expected to be held at the Bürgenstock resort and were to focus on Iran's nuclear programme and broader regional security issues. However, Swiss authorities confirmed that the meeting would not proceed as planned, Iran International reports.

The postponement comes after Tehran and Washington signed an interim memorandum online intended to lay the groundwork for ending the conflict and restoring commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route.

Earlier, the White House announced that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance had delayed his trip to Switzerland, where he had been scheduled to lead the American delegation. According to the White House, the delegation was prepared to depart but postponed the visit due to logistical challenges related to the negotiations.

The announcement followed reports by Al Mayadeen that Iran was also delaying the dispatch of its negotiating team to Switzerland. The broadcaster cited Israel's ongoing military operations in Lebanon as a factor behind the reported delay.
