Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a new integrated terminal at Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport on Tuesday, in a major boost to the economy of the archipelago that is being developed as a major magnet for tourists.
Built at a cost of Rs 710 crore, the 40,800 square meter terminal has the capacity to handle about 50 lakh passengers annually. The airport has also got four more aircraft aprons at a cost of Rs 80 crore and can now park 10 planes a a time.
“Inspired by nature, the terminal resembles a shell-shaped structure depicting sea and islands. It has several sustainability features like double insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain; skylights to provide maximum inlet of natural sunlight; LED lighting and low heat gain glazing.
It has a rainwater catchment in an underground water tank; an on-site sewage treatment plant with 100% of treated wastewater to be used for landscaping and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“The spacious new terminal will boost air traffic and help enhance tourism in the region. It will also help create enhanced employment opportunities for the local community and give fillip to the economy of the region,” it added.
