Trump faces sharp decline in Gen Z support, new poll shows

08 July 2025 21:26

US President Donald Trump is experiencing a significant drop in support among Generation Z, according to new polling data, highlighting a shift in how young voters are engaging with political figures.

A recent YouGov/Yahoo poll conducted from June 26–30 among 1,597 adults reveals that Trump's net approval rating among Gen Z voters has plunged from -23 points in May to -41 points in June. While net ratings often fluctuate more dramatically than raw approval numbers, the poll shows Trump’s overall approval among this group remains low at just 27 percent. The poll has a margin of error of ±3.2 percentage points, Caliber.Az reports citing Newsweek

Lucas Walsh, a professor at Monash University and an expert in youth political behavior, told Newsweek that the decline may be linked to how Gen Z prioritizes policy over party loyalty.

“Trump's falling support among Gen Z voters may reflect how young people respond to issues rather than party allegiances,” Walsh said.

Despite traditionally leaning left, Gen Z voters showed a narrower gap between Democratic and Republican support in the 2024 presidential election. According to AP VoteCast, voters aged 18 to 29 favored Kamala Harris over Trump by a margin of 51 percent to 47 percent. By contrast, in the 2020 election, Joe Biden secured 61 percent of the same age group’s vote, compared to Trump’s 36 percent.

A separate YouGov/Economist poll conducted last week suggests that the growing discontent among younger voters may be linked to Trump’s handling of major issues such as the economy and immigration.

“These younger voters often care less about red and blue party lines and more about issues, particularly progressive ones, and issues affecting the bottom line of their day-to-day lives,” Walsh added.
